Our
journey finally began on a rainy afternoon in northern Virginia. Although the
rain was sorely needed, the transfer to the plane seems to have gotten the luggage
of some of our party sufficiently wet to make the contents of their bags at
least damp. Of course, knowledge of this was only gained once we had
arrived in Athens.
The group was fully assembled in Zurich, Switzerland. We arrived there after
overnight flights from the United States, and had a brief layover as we awaited
the flight for our final leg to Athens. We enjoyed catching up with old friends,
and even managed a bit of shopping at the airport shops. It was quite chilly and
damp in Zurich as well, but we were met with warm temperatures and bright sunny
skies in Athens.
We finally arrived at the Hotel Divani Acropolis around 5:00 p.m. Athens time
(10:00 a.m. relative to our 3:00 p.m. Eastern time arrival at Dulles airport).
That gave us just enough time to freshen up a bit before a lovely dinner and an
early retirement in preparation for our first day of sightseeing tomorrow.
