Having
spent the night in the very plush Sofitel Athens Airport Hotel, we arose this
morning and made our way through the rush hour traffic to the port of Piraeus to
board Royal Olympic Cruise Lines' Olympia Countess for our three day
cruise. The first order of business, as always, was the emergency muster drill.
We all donned our PFDs and made our way as best we could to our lifeboat stations. We trust it will be the only occasion during which these bulky things
are used.
Most of the day aboard ship was spent catching up on some well-deserved rest.
(Rev. Tim nodded off in his cabin and slept right through the Cruise Director's
orientation session!). There were no planned activities for the entire group
during this day. Everyone was able to rejuvenate themselves however they chose.
At about 5:30 p.m. we arrived at the island of Mykonos. This was a pleasure
stop, pure and simple. Buses took us roughly one mile from the docks to the
outskirts of the village. We could walk through the winding streets, losing
ourselves (as we had been told was the intention) among the shops, taverns, and residences. Some of
us enjoyed refreshments in the seaside cafes as we watched the
sunset over the sea, bathing the whitewashed buildings and the island's famous
windmills in golden light. Upon returning to the ship we could choose from
either a dinner buffet or a formal dining experience in the ship's main dining
room.
