A number of Northwood’s church members share their time with organizations outside of the church. One such organization is Meals On Wheels (MOW), which has a number of locations in the Washington-Metropolitan area. Kathy and Fritz volunteer with the Takoma Park MOW, and June, Rose and Gail and Bob are associated with the Wheaton group. Meals On Wheels was established to deliver prepared meals to those unable to cook for themselves, due to mental or physical disability. Every day, Monday through Friday, except for some holidays and snow days, a driver and a visitor take a hot meal for lunch, and a bagged cold meal for dinner, to a list of clients. Some people only use the service for a week and others have been served for years. The cost is only seven dollars a day. For some individuals, the Meals On Wheels volunteers may be the only visitors they see all day. It takes a large number of people to keep such an endeavor going. Someone has to plan the routes, keep track of payments, make up the daily schedules, pack the meals, deliver up to seventy-two meals on five different routes, and supervise the whole operation. This is all done by volunteers, so more are always needed for this labor of love. If you have any questions about being a volunteer or receiving service, contact us and we will try to help you. |
